Yakusoku No Neverland (The Promised Neverland)
Horror and Thriller are two extremely popular genres in the anime community. Especially with massively popular series such as Death Note, Tokyo Ghoul and Another, which all have major elements of horror present in them.
The Promised Neverland brings us the genre of horror with a twist by using the orphan children at Grace Field House as the main characters and allowing the viewer to experience what life is like from the children's point of view.
The story is about orphan children living with a caregiver whom they playfully refer to as 'Mom'. They story takes a turn when the children realize that they are nothing but food for the demons who control the world, and that they were bred for dying, and that their 'Mom' was responsible for dispensing these kids to these demons, the three main characters: Emma, Norman and Ray make a plan to escape the orphanage carrying the other kids with them in order to save everybody and to live a happier life, but it's not as easy as it sounds since their 'Mom' keeps track of them by each minute
This series is currently airing, so my final review score as well as my thoughts are bound to change since the last couple episodes are not out yet, but this series has it all. A thrilling plot line, emotionally grasping characters, psychological panic and so much more!
Based off of its original manga, the anime sticks quite closely to the manga and is very accurate when it comes to the story. The aesthetic elements to this show are also quite dismal and dark and the shows gives off an overall frightful and 'creepy' mood. I would recommend this show to someone who is just became interested in the horror genre, as well as someone who is quite experience with horror and anime as well.
Some common themes and emotions present in this series are: mystery, betrayal, witty plans and executions, hate, horror, thriller and dystopia.
Oh my God! This fantastic series has ended with a bang recently and I have to say that I am extremely impressed by the character development during the entire series, but especially Isabella' (the evil mother) backstory that we see in the final episode. That emotional flashback tells us a lot about her personality and her emotion towards the kids that she takes care of.
We also see that the series ends with a bit of a cliff hanger where Emma says that she will return after two years to rescue the under four-year olds from the demons. Maybe we will see this in season 2 (hopefully).
This series, has truly defined for me what creative minds can make from a dismal and dark plot, and how character development can take place in a very short amount of time.
Definitely one of the best anime series I have seen!
Final Score: 9.5/10
